The District is partnering with the Casco Bay Estuary Partnership and the Presumpscot River Watershed Coalition to carry out the Presumpscot River Watershed Targeted Initiative Grant, a $739,942 grant funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency

Purpose: 
The scope of this two-year project is to lower the overall sediment, bacteria, nutrient, and pesticide loads to the River. The following tasks are being carried out through this project: 

Yardscaping to Reduce Nonpoint Source Pollution (carried out by the District)

Agricultural Management Improvements (Carried out by the District)

Stream Crossing Erosion Control & Culvert Replacement (Carried out by the District)

Presumpscot River Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) & Buffer Enhancement (carried out by the District & the Presumpscot River Watershed Coalition)

Golf Course Environmental Certification & Equipment Wash Pads (carried out by Presumpscot River Watch)

Education & Outreach, including the "Maps for Schools" program (carried out by the District & the Presumpscot River Watershed Coalition)

Water Quality Monitoring (carried out by Presumpscot River Watch & Friends of Casco Bay)

Watershed Information:
The Presumpscot River, the largest freshwater source to Casco Bay.  The River flows for 27 miles from Sebago Lake to the Casco Bay Estuary, draining a 205 square mile watershed that includes 12 municipalities in Cumberland and York Counties.  The watershed, which encompasses the greater Portland metropolitan area, is among the most developed and fastest-growing watersheds in Maine.

A new, state of the art culvert was installed at this site on Laskey Road in Windham.  The
culvert has an open bottom, making it more conducive to fish passage.

Cattle drink from a new watering system installed as part of this project. Their previous watering hole was a tributary to the Presumpscot River.
